Do you ever go to post something specific on Facebook, only to get distracted by something on your Timeline and then 45 minutes later pull yourself out of the fog of cat videos and teeth-gnashing comment threads only to wonder why you were there in the first place?
Facebook employs legions of trained social engineers to ensure maximum distraction. Your Timeline is central to the strategy, it’s the default page that you go to where their algorithms serve up a juicy combination of content, not surprisingly peppered with ads.
Here’s what you can do to eliminate Timeline distraction forever. On the computer that you use for work or serious business, install what is known as a ‘browser plug-in’ or ‘Extension’ called the ‘Timeline Killer’
As you can see in the image above, when I open up Facebook on my laptop I have everything at my fingertips except the Timeline. All of the shortcuts to my Pages or Groups appear on the left, my messages, Friend requests, and notifications are on top, and I can Post from the center as usual.
When I choose to entertain myself with the random content from Friends and Pages I follow on my Timeline, I do so either on my phone, or on a different browser that I use less often that does not have the plug-in installed.
This is an example of what I call “Optimizing your Environment” in my one-on-one coaching practice. My laptop is primarily for work and getting things done. By eliminating a common source of distraction, I don’t have to waste energy on willpower or interrupt my concentration.
Here are links to plug-ins for the most common browsers. They are simple to install, just follow the instructions and enjoy the flow of a distraction free day!
